All in the April Evening

Our choir is currently practising All in the April Evening. This is a poem by Katherine Tynan set to music by the Scottish composer Sir Hugh Roberton and popularised as the song "All in the April Evening."

Katharine Tynan was born 23 January 1861 in Dublin and "Sheeps and Lambs" (which are the words of All in the April Evening) is probably her most anthologised work.

She was a friend of the poet W B Yeats and her influence on Yeats should not be underestimated; they corresponded closely during their formative years as poets, and Tynan's commitment to a simple, natural, distinctively Irish poetics was both informed by and a shaping factor in Yeats' poetry.*

Yeats commented that her poem "Sheep and Lambs, (or All in the April Evening) has "the naïveté of mediaeval song . . . a product quite as much of art as of impulse." Like Blake's "The Lamb," Tynan's lyric transforms a pastoral motif into an epiphany.

You may hear our choir sing All in the April Evening at the 11.00am Mass on Sundays during April.

Our choir always welcomes new members. If you would like to join us, then check out the contact information on this web log.

Lenten Taizé Evenings

Every Thursday during Lent at at 8.00pm our choir participates in a meditative service consisting of elegant Taize chants, a period of reflective silence, a short reading of Scripture, and intercessory prayers.

This service takes place at the Franciscan Church in Galway. You are invited to come along either to sing or just to sit be there.

When you arrive at the Taize service in the Franciscan Abbey Church we hope you will feel wholly included in Taizé's call to unity, in Taizé's observance of mystery, and its quest for peace.
For information on the Jesuit Church Choir, please contact it's musical director Mr. Edward Lloyd at 091-523029.

Join Our Choir

Yes! We believe everyone can learn how to carry a tune!

Mr. Edward Lloyd, our musical director, ensures that our rehearsals are light hearted and enjoyable, but that they also stretch the abilities of choir members.

No experience is needed, and so long as you enjoy singing, we can help with the rest. We will teach you about music and find the best section suited to your voice.

And....We like to do other things as well as sing! You will be able to join in our occasional outings and parties.

We would love to have you join our choir and we know you will be glad you did. Try it and see!

Join Our Choir

We have a superb and dedicated choir. However, it has been increasingly difficult to plan ahead due to our relatively small group and our busy schedules. Therefore, this is a special invitation and an exhortation to join our choir.

We meet for rehearsals every Tuesday at the Jesuit Monastery on Sea Road, Galway at 8.00pm. We are just starting to learn new music for Easter so now is a perfect time to join. We meet for just an hour.

No experience is needed, and so long as you enjoy singing. Edward Lloyd, the choir's Musical Director, will teach you about music and find the best section suited to your voice.

Make new friends! Joining the choir is a great way to meet people.

Make magic! Singing in four part harmony feels like magic. You can feel it right down to your toes!
Just contact Edward Lloyd, our Musical Director - he's easy going and friendly! He is inviting all interested voices as potential singers to contact him on tel. no.091 - 523029

Don't let lack of experience deter you: give us a chance to prove that you aren't tone-deaf after all! You don't have to read music or have any previous musical experience to sing with us.

That doesn’t mean we set ourselves low standards as a choir in performance. What we do expect from our members is a commitment to supporting the choir, and to achieving the highest standards we can.
